What is Hashing?

The most fun you will have with running shoes and beer.

Hash/noun/:

A non-competitive cross-country run through varied terrain. The runners (acting as hounds) follow a trail set by another runner (called the “hare”).

For example: “Did you go to Monday’s Hash?”

Noun: A Hash House Harriers club, often referred to as “The Hash”
Verb: To participate in a Hash, for example: “Did you Hash last Monday?”

Rules at a glance

Hashers follow a trail marked out by the Hares. The FROP’s get to find the trail; so the BOP’s and SCB’s don’t run nearly as far. But watch out for the Falsie. The end of the Shiggy includes comradery and a Down-Down.

Then we do it again next week.

Hasher Lingo

Abu Dhabi:
Is the type of trail set with markings always requiring the Hashers to go back to the Check from a Checkback. Non – Abu Dhabi would be trail markings that do not require going all the way back to the Check from the Checkback.

BOP:
Hashers who run at the Back of the Pack.

Check:
A circle is a check marking where the trail could lead in any direction. At this point Hashers head off in separate directions trying to find trail. The Check Chickens remain at the Check.

Checkback:
A circle with a X through it is a Checkback and the Hashers return to the Check to find true trail.

Check Chicken:
This would be a Hasher who stands at the Check and waits for true trail to be found.

Choir:
A person or group selected by the RA to sing Hash songs at the Down-Downs.

Down-Downs:
At the end of the run after the Re-Group, Hashers get punished/rewarded for events that occurred on trail.

False Trail:
Self-explanatory, the FRB went the wrong way.

FRB:
Front Running Bastard is the enthusiastic Hasher who often runs the whole trail (all the Checkbacks)! These hero’s usually find the true trail before the rest of the pack arrives. This saves the rest of the pack time and effort and ensures they reach the Regroup as swiftly as possible.

FROP:
Front of the Pack runner (a.k.a. FRB).

Hare(s):
Hashers who set the trails.

Harriette:
Some Kennels use this to refer to female runners. Our Kennel just calls all members Hashers.

Hash:
The Hash is everyone who hashes.

Hasher:
Anyone (female or male) who runs or walks with the Hash.

HashCash:
Money collected at the On-In before Down-Downs (usually $5). New Boots are free for the first Hash.

Kennel:
In the world of Hashing this is the word used to refer to which club/group to which you are a member.

Milestone:
From your first Hash run the runs are tracked. Monumental runs (50, 69, 100, 150, 169, 200, 250, 269…) are celebrated as completing Milestones.

New Boot/Virgin:
When a runner comes to their first Hash they are called a New Boot or Virgin.

On-In:
Is the drinking establishment identified by the Hare where Down-Downs commence. May through ~ September (if weather permits) it is usually outside. The remainder of the year it is held in a pub.

Punishments:
If an action or situation on the run/walk is deemed funny or memorable by the RA, the Hasher may be “punished” by drinking a small cup of beer, cider or water.

RA/Religious Advisor:
Religious Advisor is the elected (volunteered or voluntold) person for the run who collects dirt or deeds committed on trail and then leads the Down-Downs at the On-In.

SCB:
Short Cutting Bastard is a Hasher who short cuts the trail.

Shiggy:
Is a wet area (any area that Hashers will get their feet wet) on trail that is preferred by Hashers. The best trails have shiggy!

Swill:
Fluids (beer, cider or water) to re-hydrate at the Re-Group.
